If Saldana signs for the role, she will play the wife of a bipolar husband who has gone off of his meds and has lost his job, forcing her back into the workforce. The husband would be played by Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right).

Infinitely Polar Bear, produced by J.J. Abrams, is due to begin shooting in September, before Star Trek 2.

Speaking of Star Trek 2, Vulture is reporting that the rumor is, if Saldana signs for this role, she would go “straight to a Star Trek sequel in November.”

TrekMovie.com spoke recently with writers Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who explained why it would be best to delay rather than put out an inferior product.

“We feel pretty strongly that the best version of this movie is directed by J.J. [Abrams],” said Lindelof. “And therefore we totally defer to his availability and when he wants to direct. This isn’t us passing the buck, but it is us passing the buck. Is it possible to start shooting the movie in September? Absolutely, we would totally be ready to go. But that doesn’t mean we are going to start in September, that is a question only J.J. can answer.”

“We made the commitment to each other on the first movie not to put that movie out unless we felt it was going to be the best version of the movie,” said Kurtzman. “And that meant taking our collective time. The first Trek had a release date of Christmas originally and we had to move it to the summer because it wasn’t going to be the best version, it was going to be rushed and it would have never been the movie that we put out there. Part of our responsibility to Trek is to make sure it isn’t rushed, that we take our time and do it right.’

Orci explained that a deadline for finishing the movie has not even been set. “Deadlines are great,” he said. “We haven’t had a deadline yet, and that is why we keep not finishing it. Give us a deadline and we’ll finish it. We only closed our deal with Paramount two or three months ago. So it is not just doing other things, it is ‘let’s find out when we are really going to go and then we will really get to work.’”

The writers admitted that the movie could be finished by June 29, 2012, but see no reason to rush it just to make that release date.

Although Abrams has yet to see the script for Star Trek 2, he was able to let Stern and Trek fans know how far behind the sequel was, so as mentioned during the last few weeks, Star Trek 2 will probably not be released next summer.

“We’re probably six months behind,” Abrams told Stern.

In another interview with MTV, Abrams elaborated on the delay. “I would say it’s not an impossibility to do it, but the studio agrees the most important thing is that the movie be good. No one wants to make something that makes its date but isn’t necessarily worth your time. I want to make sure that whatever we do and whenever it comes out that it’s something that people will have a great time watching.

“We’ve been discussing everything. The most important thing is how do we do something that we get excited about and that is worthy of the audience.”

No word yet on whether Abrams will direct, and he won’t commit one way or the other until he sees the script. “Without even knowing what the story is, part of me feels jealous of anyone else who gets to work with those actors—such an amazing group of actors,” he said. “But I also want to make sure I know what it is I’m being asked to direct before I do it. We’re working on the story and getting there. I’m very excited about what they’ve come up with so far.”

“As the actors, we take the scripts and we bring them to life to the absolute best of our abilities, and we leave it there,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery follows the advice that he was once given. “…someone very wise told me a long time ago a very simple statement as far as people’s opinion of me,” he said. “And that is, “In truth, your opinion of me is not my concern because, regardless of what we do from an acting standpoint, you’re going to have your opinion. You’re going to love it or you’re going to hate it, and you will have very strong reasoning to back whatever your opinion is. So, for me, just do the best job you can and leave it there.

“So, for me, we did the best work we possibly could, and hopefully we did more good than harm, and (hopefully) the fans will love us more than they hate us in the long run.”

One thing Montgomery would love to do is to be in a project that would bridge the gap between the Star Trek: Enterprise era and the original series (Abrams-version) era. “I think it would be a lot of fun,” said Montgomery. “I think if you brought in a group like us (the Enterprise cast) and mixed it with the inner mechanisms of the Star Trek (2009) world, I think it would be a complete hit with the fans – and the fans from every generation. Truly, I think for every fan that’s a fan of all of the series and all of the movies, those guys would actually love it. The fans had started to buy into us more by the fourth season of Enterprise, and I think they wanted to see more of us. It was like cutting their legs out from under them when we were canceled so abruptly as we were. And including us (in the next Star Trek feature) would give a lot of people closure.”

Last seen in the fourth season episode All the Rage, which aired last summer, Wheaton will appear in seven episodes to air in the second half of the season which begins next month.

Wheaton’s character Parrish will “butt heads” with Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) for the attention of Dr. Holly Martin (Felicia Day), a “quirky Department of Defense” visitor to Eureka.

Also appearing on Eureka this summer is comic book legend Stan Lee (Spider-Man), who will make a cameo appearance in the summer premiere as an expert on gamma rays.
